You can also create a “My Social Security” account to manage your benefits. The U.S. Social Security Administration has information on  their website and you can also call toll-free at 1-800-772-1213.  On their website, socialsecurity.gov , you can apply for certain kinds of benefits, find out where your local social Security office is located,  request a replacement Medicare card and find copies of Social Security publications.

If you know someone who is a prisoner, it is important that they know their rights .  “Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments generally are not payable for months that you are confined to a jail, prison or certain other public institutions for commission of a crime.  You are not automatically eligible for Social Security or SSI Payments when you are released ” according to a pamphlet distributed by The U.S. Social Security Administration .
